One of the best ways to prevent heart disease is to reduce the consumption of foods that are bad for the heart. Many of the foods that make up the western diet are not good for heart health. The following ten common foods are some of the worst. While these foods don’t have to be eliminated from the diet entirely, they need to be eaten infrequently and in moderation.
1. Processed Meats
Processed meats like hot dogs, bacon and deli meats are worse for the heart than red meat. Some of the negative effects of these types of meats are suspected to be related to its higher salt content and higher levels of preservatives.
While experts don't suggest switching to vegetarian diets or insist that processed meats need to be eliminated from diets altogether, there is enough evidence to conclude that these types of foods should be eaten in very low quantities. Experts do agree that whole grains and vegetables need to be present in high quantities in the diet with meats in general taking up a small portion of overall food consumption.
