10 Common Causes of a Heart Attack

Heart attacks can be caused by a variety of different health issues. Many of them relate to lifestyle factors that people generally can control. Two important considerations for optimal heart health are eating a healthy diet and getting regular exercise. While some heart problems seem to have a genetic component, even those risks can be offset to some degree by making healthy choices.

1. Cholesterol

Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to heart disease. The cholesterol builds up in the walls of arteries and causes atherosclerosis.

The arteries become more narrow as a result, and less blood is able to flow to the heart. When the blood is completely blocked off to a portion of the heart by an artery, this blockage results in heart attacks. Because there are no signs of high cholesterol, it is important to have one's cholesterol levels checked at least once every five years. Reducing cholesterol intakes can be a crucial component of heart attack prevention.
